[ weird how quick that worked, except it's not really. dave's voice is his usual brand of almost too quiet as he picks up ]

Hey. [ and then stalls out without any clear sense of direction for a second. ]

[The background noises are that of a forest so like birds, rivers, etc. John's away from the group and probably up in a tree.]

Hey. [He doesn't mind the stalling, at least, but he'll gently prompt.] How's it going out there?

Oh, you know. Okay? [ dave's close enough to see the camp but far enough away to murmur without being tracked, high up to stay off the snow.

"okay" is variable and may or may not be the truth. he can't sleep much and it's stupid and it's been just a little over three days since he heard john's voice. ] ...You?

[windeity]

Okay, I guess. [The shrug is almost audible.] The people in my group are mostly nice. We made a campfire and everything.

[parodeity]

Campfire's cool. [ a pause. ] Sing me something?

[windeity]

[...ah. So this is why the phone call away from people. There's a pause as he wracks his brain for a song before he starts to sing.]

Do you hear me, I'm talking to you across the water across the deep blue ocean, under the open sky, oh my, baby I'm trying... [And he'll continue even if it's a song for two people.]

[parodeity]

[ ...is this a request for a duet, john, what the fuck.

dave laughs after a second and takes over the second set of vocals, voice soft and a little rougher than usual. ]

[windeity]

[It's kind of sad, isn't it? He continues singing along until the song's over and he lets the line go quiet for a little while.]

...it's good to hear your voice, dude.

[parodeity]

[ they're two idiots in trees. dave's head hits the trunk softly and he shuts his eyes and just listens. ]

Did you think it'd be like this?

[windeity]

Nope. [Decisive, at least.] But then again I was not entirely sure what it would be like. Maybe I was hoping you would not be this far away.

[parodeity]

I mean, did you think... [ he trails off. hm. ] Hey, John?

[windeity]

[And now he wonders.]

What's up?

[parodeity]

[ there's just a long pause. ] ...I'm sorry.

[windeity]

For what? [His tone subconsciously grows softer, but now he's really curious and a little concerned.]

[parodeity]

Being...me. You know. [ that makes no sense. ] Sorry. It's just...yeah.

[windeity]

Rewind a sec for me. What do you mean for being you? I happen to like you very much, you know.

[parodeity]

The...not being a good person or really a human being thing.

[windeity]

Does it matter if I say that I think you are a perfectly good person by my standards?

[parodeity]

[ he shrugs.

john can't see him shrug. ]

Conceited brat who needs to learn to be human. Reprehensible. You were better when you were dead. They're not...wrong.

[ he's the wrong person in the wrong place at the wrong time and he just sounds tired, mostly. ]

I miss feeling safe. You tricked me into it.

Dave. [His tone's sharp and he's worried, immediately so, and he isn't entirely sure what to say next.] What are you talking about? Did someone say something to you out there?

[...okay no, he needs to. Calm down.] ...I should have tried to talk to someone and switch groups. Something.

[parodeity]

No. I mean, not recently. It was a while ago. Just... [ another shrug, another pause as he remembers john can't see. ] Two different people, two different situations, both of 'em I super deserved, and one of 'em is here. Not really the point.

[ but he was quoting people, yeah. ]

This is probably a good thing. I mean, bein' split up.

[windeity]

Kind of the point. [Dave brought it up and John assumes it bothers him still. It definitely bothers John and...he vaguely has suspicions. He doesn't say though.]

How is being split up good, you think?

[parodeity]

Insert platitudes about distance and hearts here? [ look let's not talk about if it bothers dave??? mostly he just believes it, full stop. ]

[windeity]

I am pretty sure absence doesn't make the heart grow fonder when the heart is overly fond as it is, dude.

Really? 'Cause I'm pretty sure...well, it's just "time", not "absence".
