sorry for his everything
it was supposed to be some kind of scavenger hunt. there's just a paperclipped pack of fourteen cards for john and nothing else; the rest of whatever the hell dave had planned to do was probably contingent on being in the same location, but he'd opted to just have chiyo collect the dumb thing to send off, rather than waiting to send john through a puzzle gauntlet for the damn splintered letter. they're paperclipped in order, but dave didn't number them if john mixes them up.
one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen. fourteen is inside a plain white envelope, and is just a sheet of notebook paper, front and back.
whenever chiyo's deliveries hit group four, dave sends a single text to john, assuming that group three should get theirs around the same time or maybe earlier, who knows: ]
"have you ever had someone who when youre around them
its like your heart is a little bit lighter and the world doesnt seem to be pressing in on you quite so much
like theyre a shelter youve always been looking for
or a safe harbor from the storm
and the moments you spend together are carved out from the timeline and the world and theyre just yours
not always good not always bad
but always precious
moments that you look forward to throughout the day
and that keep you going throughout the week
its not really romance im talking about but friendship
but like
its how every moment with him is like that
and when he smiles at me i always want to smile back even though i dont do that really
and it makes the world seem a little bit more okay when he laughs or grabs my hand or tells me a stupid joke
or insists that matthew machoaney is a good actor
im dating him because of all that
and because he respects the lines i draw in the sand
like theyre iron walls
which maybe they kind of need to be sometimes
and because he makes me feel safe
and like every place he is happens to be home
and because i love him"

If you're John Egbert, you kind of want to burst into tears because the whole thing is extremely overwhelming, but you don't. You don't, because you're in a group of 29 people on a mission and it's been almost two weeks since you've seen your boyfriend and you start to grow more resentful of this fact every day. You think about the text you sent a friend. You think about the whole day you planned together and how it got ruined.
You wonder if he received the bouquet of red roses, red carnations and red snapdragons you were hoping would find there way to him. You worry about his safety and his wellbeing and you wish you could burn the world to get closer to him and be with him because you love him, you idiot, you're beginning to realize maybe you're in love with him whatever that means and that, too, is overwhelming.
Instead, a song is sent.]

an idiot.
either way he's locked away the wolf thing to Not Thing About in the pretend it never happened box of suppression, and today is...okay, maybe. completely bittersweet and a little lonely, but not bad. last year he went on an actual date on valentine's, and he'd never figured out if that was going to be a thing this year, but. ]

but yeah
im available for phonecalls
i wont even charge you
[ ignore him he loves the music file. ]
