dawn is WAY TOO EARLY!! maybe nine or ten? the laptops have the time on them so we can gauge it from there. i will meet you then :D!
[I would be down to thread it! I know we have other threads with them as well but I think it could be a fun thing if you have the time and inclination.]
[John is a real delight! I'm always down to thread things out. :)]
["Maybe nine or ten" means half-past nine, right? It does to Ochako, and that's why she's hurrying toward the well at a quarter-past nine. She's in her hero costume, of course, with her helmet tucked under one arm and a small tote bag swinging off the other. It's full of training necessities: containers full of water, pieces of (gross) grey fruit, clean towels, and as many makeshift first aid materials as she could find. Who knows how serious this is actually going to get?
So hello, John! If he's already at the well, she's barreling right toward him; if he arrives a few minutes after her, she's sitting on the edge of the well and kicking her feet excitedly. Either way, she's ready to get this show on the road!]
[Ochako is a good girl. Ochako is a smart girl, rather, because like despite his best friend being the dude of time John doesn't know what the hell he's doing in terms of timing and he's running late late late! A glance at his laptop says it's about 9:25 by the time he books it out of his house. It helps that he can fly since it cuts on time, but she's already there by the time he shows up.
He doesn't have anything on him that she can see, but instead of her barreling right toward him it's the opposite. It takes all of his willpower to stop mid-flight, hovering in front of her with a wide grin.]
Hey! Sorry, sorry, I kind of lost track of what time it was. You weren't waiting long were you?
[Seeing him fly so easily will always be impressive. She perks up once he zips in front of her, offering him a wide, friendly smile. Is she annoyed? Oh, of course not. She's just genuinely happy to see him!]
It's okay! I haven't been here long at all. And it's nice to sit in the sun, don't you think? [Even if the sunlight here doesn't seem as bright as the sunlight at home. It's the lack of color, probably, so she just shrugs as she hops to her feet.] I'm ready to get started, though. I can't wait to see what you can do!
[This is why Ochako's the best. She's absolutely one of the cooler people he's met here and it's all the more reason he's excited to get started.]
I think so. Even if we cannot really see it that well you can feel it and that's all that matters to me. I've kind of missed the sun a lot. [It happens when you're on a battleship for three years and then all hell breaks loose.]
But likewise! I've never officially sparred with anyone or taught people how to fight...or learned from people? [Eheh.] Half of us learned on our own and the other half have been training with their weapons since we were like really little. It'll be even cooler since I have definitely never learned from someone who has a Quirk before.
[He missed the sun... huh. Maybe he's from a place where it rains all the time. She puzzles over that for a second—but only for a second, because then he's continuing on and her mind is temporarily blown.]
Really? You didn't have a teacher? That must have made things difficult.
[Honestly, where would she even be without her teachers' encouragement? It's a scary thought, to be sure, but she brushes it to the side as she tries to be focus on being the best teacher-student that she can possibly be. Look at that determined look on her face! She's going to give this her all!!!]
Um, I guess... we should talk about what we want to improve? For me, I want to get better at fighting up close. It's easy for me to use my quirk to set traps and stuff, but I have to be able to deal with people at close range, too! I have a few moves I want to practice. [She throws a few practice punches into the air, just for emphasis. Prepare to get THROWN TO THE GROUND, John.] But what about you?
[Technically his dad kind of strifed with him but that was with a clawhammer and a cake. And he learned by experience and taking on a bunch of imps in his house. Should he have had a teacher? Maybe. But he doesn't think on it now, it's been years and he's...still a little wrapped up in guilt but that's why it's important to get better.]
Close-range is kind of what I would like to work on, too! I mean I know how to fight using my windy powers and my hammer and sometimes I have to get close for that, but some guys have really long swords and long-range weapons that make it hard to do much. I would like to know how to fight with just my hands, I think. Everything works fine now but...[Hm.] Ochako, has there ever been a time you couldn't use your quirk? Like it just didn't activate or something.
[Hmm. A rather serious question, that. She stops throwing punches at an imaginary target and turns right back toward him.]
Our class' teacher can cancel our quirks. It's only happened a few times, and it doesn't last very long, but it feels weird. [Honestly, it's like having a leg suddenly stop working: uncomfortable and very worrying. She frowns as she remembers the unpleasant sensation.] Other than that, though, my quirk has never just stopped working.
[There are, of course, the new temporary-quirk-cancelling drugs on the market, and the very, very scary thought of what happened to an upperclassman, but they didn't happen to her. There's no need to worry him about that kind of stuff.]
Has there been a time where you couldn't use your abilities?
A quirk that cancels quirks. [He's assuming and that is honestly a little alarming. He considers how to answer that, unaware that he's actually letting himself float a bit instead of staying on the ground again.]
When I was first learning to use it, I couldn't get the wind to work right away. But...there are other abilities I have now that I still have not mastered and I can't get to work right at all sometimes.
[But forget those!] They're not that important for student-teaching though. So I was just wondering.
[Ochako notices the floating, but she isn't about to point it out to him. It might be similar, she thinks, to how she floats up whenever she's feeling a particular way. What if these... abilities that John is talking about are more important—and more worrying—then he's letting on? Hmm.
If he doesn't want to talk about them right now, though, that's fine. It's his choice, and she won't push him!! But how can she still help...]
Well, [she begins slowly, looking upward as she thinks,] What if we sparred without using our abilities? Because this place is so weird, isn't it? We might run into a situation where I can't use my quirk, or where you can't control the wind. If we get used to fighting without them, though...
[Finally looking back at him, she flashes him a confident smile.]
[Floating is an absent-minded action but he grins down at Ochako when she makes that decision.]
I think that is probably the best idea. Without color, we don't know what else will disappear or if we will enter areas that nullify our powers, too. But isn't that going to hurt if I punch you?
[Wait, what? Ochako tilts her head a bit, brow furrowing as she blinks up at him for a moment. That's such a baffling thing to ask! Unless—]
...How strong are you?
[Because she, of course, assumes he's asking that question because he has some other ability he hasn't mentioned yet. A strength-increasing one, maybe?]
Um. I fight with hammers, so...pretty strong, I guess! I just wanted to make sure! [Also he's old-fashioned sometimes and hasn't hit many girls in his lifetime.]
[Hammers alone don't make you crazy powerful, so being worried about this is... weird, John. Really weird. Ochako, however, is a Polite girl, and so she just offers him a puzzled little smile.]
I'm strong, too, you know? My school is really tough, so I know that I can handle anything you throw at me. You don't have to hold back at all!
[She punches the air again for that added! Emphasis!]
Alright, alright. [He holds up his hands in mock-defense, but he's grinning and stretching his arms a little.] No holding back for either of us then. How do you want to start then, just...throw a punch and see who lands a hit first? That sounds easiest.
SORRY i accidentally marked this as read jhgjfdhgfd
[Pre-workout stretches are always good, but she totally did hers before she sprinted all the way over here. Ochako is that person who always gives things 110%.]
That sounds fine to me! But... not here, right? [With the awkwardness already behind them, she can't help but to laugh.] People might think we're crazy if they see us fighting by the well.
[Can you tell just how often he's done this? The answer is "never" and he grins even in spite of his own mistakes.]
Good point. There're some empty buildings, actually, that we can probably use? Like a boxing ring except it isn't boxing. They're deserted is the point so we don't have to worry about wrecking stuff.
[The first rule of Awash Club is don't talk about Awash Club. But with that he motions for her to follow, apparently already set with a building in mind.]
An empty boat house or something. I have spent a lot of time in Bluo I think I know the best place to look. And we can let everybody else know, too, if they want somewhere indoors to train. Guren had a lot of people respond to him when he posted on the forum.
[She just falls in step beside him, hoisting her tote a little higher on her shoulder.]
There were a lot of people who signed up. It's great, right? I've not talked to him in a while, but I'm sure that Guren is really happy about that. I know that I am! [She's Stoked, actually.] I mean, I hope we don't have to actually fight anything while we're here, but... I'm kind of excited to see what everyone can do.
Hey, you never know when we'll have to beat up some furniture or something. [That was obnoxious, let's not do that again.] I'm excited too! I think we have a really good group of people with different skills that will work together great.
[He approaches Bluo and veers off toward an abandoned boat house, opening the door and revealing to Ochako the empty space and the high (albeit dirty) windows.]
This should be plenty of space. But anyway I hope he's happy about it. He did a really good thing getting us motivated.
[Ochako takes a step inside, giving their new surroundings a quick inspection... and hey, this is surprisingly nice? A little dusty, yes, but what isn't dusty in this town. She promptly heads over to the nearest corner, kicking at the dust a bit before dropping her bag onto the floor.]
He did! Guren is the best, even if he can be a little grumpy.
[It's the truth!! But while talking with friends is one of Ochako's favorite activities, she is absolutely itching to get this show on the road. She takes a deep breath, trying to get into the zone, before she turns back to give John a confident grin.]
[He gives a little wave of his hands, blowing some dust out of the way with the wind before he faces her and gives a nod. He places his feet in what he thinks is a fighting stance, a matching grin in place.]
Count of three. One...two...three! [And off he goes moving in immediately for an upper jab to see how she blocks.]
[Just so you know: I've officially watched five videos about how to block punches? Youtube is now giving me very weird recommendations, but on the plus side, I feel more prepared for a fight than I ever have in my life.
Ochako, on the other hand, is an old hat at this whole fighting thing. What's with this move, John? It's so obvious what he's going for, and she instinctively brings her left arm to guard the lower half of her face as she leans right back. Please, feel free to punch her forearm; she's just going swing her right arm around and try to sock him on the chin.]
[Luckily for Ochako (or maybe unluckily?? Debatable.) John is going solely by instinct which means that she blocks and instead of actually, like, letting himself get socked in the face he just turns into the wind on instinct.
