Sounds like a good plan to me.

[It doesn't take long for him to remove the leftovers from his 'dex to put in the fridge and get changed and eventually he grabs his ghost blanket and hits the lights, using his phone to navigate in the dark back to Dave's bed and promptly stumbling over one of his cords. At least he says upright.]

Dude. We seriously need to talk about this, too. [Also he's apparently doing all of this without his glasses so good luck, John.]

I thought we had a firm "don't talk about it" policy on where we sleep? [ promptly ignoring the cord issue and throwing out a terrible distraction. dave has shifted closer to the wall and mewpac is making space for herself on one of the pillows, so.

john's glasses have since been placed on dave's desk but he doesn't bother to remove his shades, as per usual, and will wait for john to actually get on the bed before he rearranges himself here. ]

Yeah. That is still in place. [Mostly because he's definitely not ready to confront that just yet and once he's sure where the kitten is and spots his glasses on the desk he'll ease onto the free space on the bed and toss the blanket over both of them.]

Pretty soon she is going to be too big to really do that. [Mewpac will someday be a cat and not small enough to tote around in their pockets. It's weird.]

[ dave had eased under the covers and slides those over john too, his bed. a mess of untucked sheets and whatever as usual. once john's actually on the bed he shifts closer, sticking to the policy of not talking about it but curling up into john's side regardless and resting his head on john's chest.

john wasn't wrong about heartbeats. ]

Just talk to me. [ actually finally circling around to answering. ]

It might! [It won't, they both suck. His feet kick a little to try and fix Dave's sheets but eventually he gives up, shifting enough so he's on his back and Dave can curl up in his usual fashion.

...eventually, he'll have to confront what all of this means instead of pretending it doesn't exist. He can tell himself that this is just how things are, that things are better, that Dave's his best friend and he'd do anything for his friends, but logically he knows there's more to it than that and it's sudden and startling enough that he backs off immediately. Instead, a hand comes up to play with Dave's hair instead to get him to relax and shifts so he can hear his heartbeat that he's seriously hoping is steady and not picking now to go a little crazy.]

Okay. All of my finals are pretty early in December, so at least I can stop worrying about school soon. Winter break's soon too, isn't it?

[ idk you tell me. how steady is that heartbeat? ]

If by "soon" you mean near the end of December, yeah. I think we can technically just kick it in the dorm. [ ...since john isn't leaving because dave was promised a christmas and new years thing. ] Unless you really, really want to sleep in a bunkbed and deal with a mess of people.

[Fairly, to his credit! On occasion it spikes but for the most part it's perfectly steady and calm.]

That's still soon enough! Like a month. I can handle that. [He wrinkles his nose though.] As much as I like people I think staying here isn't a bad idea. I've never slept in an actual bunkbed.

Only benefit is you can hang, like, blankets down from the top bunk to make curtains. Dark.

[ apparently dave had the bottom bunk...? and luckily he wouldn't have reacted to a non-steady heartbeat outwardly anyway, but a steady one is something to count.

[A hum.] You're happier in the dark? [Dark bunkbed, darkrooms, etc. John has a steady enough heartbeat that Dave can calm down at least. Thanks for that everybody.

After a short lull though he shifts to let his hand run over Dave's arm and side and basically treat him like a cat and try to lull him into relaxing.]

I'm happier with you. [ picked out at random from possible responses when john starts treating him like a cat, but: ] I prefer darker places for sleep, yes. It's harder to fall asleep when it isn't. Also, they feel safer.

...oh. [Cool, I hope Dave's fine with the increase of John's heartbeat for a few seconds. He continues though so that's fine.] I mean, I am sort of used to falling asleep in really inconvenient places at inconvenient times but I can understand that.

[A pause, because he's unsure if it's safe to ask.] ...do you feel unsafe otherwise? [Read more: "do you feel unsafe often" but that would be pushing it.]

[ whoops!! john doesn't pause though, so. that's absolutely definitely fine. dave has at this point slung an arm over john's waist since it's more comfortable, sorry. the cat is probably sprawled fully on a pillow, content in the fact only one is being used. ]

I don't feel unsafe with you. [ dave just. answers a different question entirely. ]

[Great, he's trapped. This is definitely fine and he's taking a few deep breaths to keep things steady and he's still keeping his palm flat and running over Dave's arm and side to warm him up and keep him still.

I hope it stays that way then. I would probably be a shitty friend if you ever did, you know?

[ john is stronger than dave he can definitely get out, especially since it's a loose hold!! wow!! ]

I don't think friendship and feelin' safe go hand in hand. It doesn't make someone a shitty friend or person.

Someone you like to spend time with. [ he'd shrug but he doesn't want to jostle john. ] That's not mutually exclusive with someone you feel safe or comfortable around.

What qualifies as safe and comfortable? [He probably doesn't realize it, but his tone has softened a little, too.]

[ there are. a lot of answers to that question? although actually dave doesn't have many things or people he qualifies as perfectly 100% safe and comfortable these days.

he's still exhausted, so he just. sums up an easy answer. ]

Always do. And they're already shut. [ he's drowsy but not asleep yet? john keeps asking questions!! ]

How is that even comfortable? [Will John learn to shut up? Probably not.]

I'm used to it. [ john do you want him to sleep! or not! ] And it's easier if I know where they are.

Alright, alright...[He goes quiet and he continues letting Dave lay on him and the movements of his arm.] Go to sleep, Strider.
