Probably. It's not that I didn't know Vic well in a bunch of other ways? I think I loved her for a while. [Alas.] But it worked out given I decided to come here anyway.

What made you decide to come here? Was it just Dave, or...?

[She nearly pauses in her ladeling for a moment, glancing over at him.]

Seriously? Dude, nice! Fingers crossed.

[An awkward, nervous grin. He'll get back to that in a second.]

Actually I didn't even know Dave existed before I walked into our dorm room. I'd never met him in this lifetime before then. It was just...it's maybe stupid now. But I wanted a change from Seattle and from my old friends.

Dude, seriously? I bet that must have been a shock for him, if he'd already been remembering stuff about you. Man.

[But.]

I noticed you avoiding that second topic.

Oh I am pretty sure it freaked him out entirely. He was weird the first couple of weeks before I remembered who he was and then everything made sense after that.

[...sigh.] I'm not avoiding it. I'm just...nervous, maybe. I'm still not sure this is going to work.

Yeah. I can't even imagine how I'd deal with that... But it sounds like it worked out. That's, like, some fate or destiny shit.

[She tilts her head.]

[He stirs the soup again.] And yes, that is in fact what I said but he's also I think still super upset with me since we haven't actually talked since Friday besides when you came over on Sunday. [Which was, as John had told her, perfectly fine and cordial.]

So. He can be super into me and I can be super into him and this could still fuck up a lot. That's all.

But even if there's outside stuff that comes into play, you can decide how to react to it, right?

[She shakes her head.]

I'm fairly sure you're overthinking this. Like... You have memories of being friends for ages, right? You can get through this.

Usually, yeah. It's all complicated and dumb but at least this life is mostly mine. [A shrug.] And yeah, I do. I have a lot of memories from this life and other timelines. It'll be fine, I'm just freaking out because I haven't actually asked anybody out, like, ever. And I've also never asked out a guy. So it's a double-threat.

Just be yourself. He likes you, you don't have to try too hard. Other than, uh, being respectful of his boundaries?

Okay, being myself is how we got here though? So I can be myself but also maybe chill out on other parts of being myself for right now. But I know his limits and boundaries. We have a tendency to push each other's limits and I guess that was always true no matter what version of him I was dealing with and--

--[And he pauses. He seems to pause for a moment...before there's a loud groan and he buries his face in one of his hands.] Boundaries. Right.

John. Deep breaths, seriously. You are absolutely overthinking this, which is fair, because this kind of thing is probably terrifying? But also, please don't.

No, it's not that. I mean it is that but also something else and never mind, I get it. It's fine. This is going to be fine? [Fun things: remembering embarrassing memories in public.] It'll be fine and I will keep you up to date. Promise.

[She looks at him for another moment, pausing.]

You sure you're okay?

[...SIGH.]

So do you remember when I played you Dave's song for the first time and you remembered the thing about your mom? This is kind of like that. Not that I remember that exact thing but it is the same caliber of "oh my god."

[She pauses, looking around.]

Do you want to duck out of here real quick to talk about it?

I don't...[HELP.] Maybe? Um. I have no idea how to even process this. [What if he serves more soup instead.]

[A small smile.]

I can tell the manager we need a bathroom break if you need, man.

I think I lost my mind. [He doesn't specify if he means the memory or here which doesn't help.]

...Okay. Well, I'm going to go tell the manager, and I'll meet you right outside?

Yeah. [He's just going to shut his eyes for a second and once the last person leaves their line he drops the ladle in the pot carefully and bails for the outside world byeeeee.]

[True to her word, she heads to the manager to tell him they'll need a while before she follows him outside, concern clear on her face.]

What did you remember?

[He's leaning against the wall outside, but he doesn't look like he's upset or anything. On the contrary...he's sort of flushed and staring at his feet in disbelief.]

Did I ever tell you about me, Jade, and Davesprite and our three years together? [He knows he told her about his sister (technical sister, whatever), but he doesn't recall if they spoke about the rest.]

[She shakes her head, coming over to lean near him on the wall, though she's careful to give him enough space.]

No, I don't think so. What happened?

Okay. I think I need to explain some things about the game we played. When we started the game, all of us ended up with sprites that were helping us. Mine took on the form of my Nanna and Dave's ended up being a version of himself that was combined with a bird somehow. His name's Davesprite, kind of like how my nanna was Nannasprite.

I'm still not entirely clear on everything that happened, but when the game started and we had to end the universe, Rose, Dave, Jade and I all split up to take a three-year journey to the new universe since we had to scratch ours. Dave and Rose stayed together which a bunch of our other friends, and Jade and I were on a battleship. Because all of us went godtier before we split up, we could use our powers and Jade had used hers to shrink down all of our planets. Davesprite was on one of the planets and so when Jade resized everyone again he joined us for the trip.

We were all thirteen. And we were on a ship traveling at the speed of light but we had no way of getting in contact with Dave and Rose and the others for those three years. Make sense so far?
