...Well, now I'm kinda curious what your guesses would be.

Uh. I don't know, yoga? [He's still mostly sprawled over Dave's lap like an actual dumbass.] I have a few guesses but it would be way easier if you just told me what might help.

What are the other guesses, though? [ HE WANTS TO KNOW...he starts toying with john's hair then i guess since john's. right there. ]

Well...I don't really sing, so playing something would be the default. Turning everything off and laying in the dark just talking for a while, you already told me you don't stay asleep through movies and stuff...[He stops again because the other answers are kind of embarrassing so he skips though.] Giving you a heartbeat to track. Stuff like that. But like I said, I cannot really know entirely.

[ well he’s not totally wrong but dave doesn’t confirm or deny but swings back into a familiar protest as he starts absently combing his fingers through john’s hair instead of just toying with it. ]

So you wouldn’t sing me a lullaby, John? Rude.

Not if I wanted to make you fall asleep, no. I doubt that would work so well. [But he's making himself comfortable as Dave continues to do that, unsure of what to say (if anything) and wondering for the nth time that day just what the fuck they're doing.]

Why do you think it wouldn’t? [ he doesn’t confirm or deny anything although dave actually can think of what would work best. ]

Because you'd be too invested in listening since I don't do it at all. [Like. Dave confirmed that already and so John just assumes. The longer Dave combs through his hair though the more relaxed he is, letting one eye close but keeping the other open.]

...maybe. Depends on how tired I was and if it’d ever happen again. [ he keeps doing the hair thing, quieting down.

dave isn’t supposed to be the one making someone tired and relaxed but he’s better at it apparently ]

[No, John's just a moron. Thankfully he's not at risk of falling asleep just yet but he's comfortable this way and he snorts under his breath.]

Maybe. I like playing a lot more than I like singing is all. [But something occurs to him.] Did I sing in our old life or something?

No. No one ever sang for me back then, either. [ dave’s tone is a little amused even as his hand keeps moving. ] I used to think of it as some, like...I don’t know, you know how sometimes you see dumb shit in movies and think “oh, that’d be nice” followed by “and impossible, never gonna happen”?

Yeah, I guess so. But I think maybe if you had asked back then we probably would have said yes. Or at least one of us would have. You had three of us to try.

I wouldn’t have asked back then. [ not when he was a kid. text convos were fine, but bro could have interrupted voice stuff more easily and maybe it would have been too weird even for dave to ask for a recorded lullaby. ] As to that, I just...really wanted to hear your voice. Dunno, guess I figured that would make you more real somehow?

Right. And my physical presence would not make things real enough. [He's teasing but simultaneously he finds himself wondering what else is going on in Dave's head.]

Well. Now that you have heard it, is it what you were thinking it'd be?

You underestimate how often I heard all of you speaking to me. [ quietly. ] And it’s your voice. So...yes?

We never video chatted? [That's a surprise to him but at the same time. They were ten. So maybe that's not that surprising.] I mean I knew what you guys looked like since I never felt like I didn't when I saw you in my memories so I guess I am surprised.

[...also that's. Cute. And weird. And he's not sure how to handle that so he shifts a little so Dave can't see the look on his face.] ...it's not off the table completely but it is still a thing I'm not really up for all the time. Singing, I mean. Not talking.

It wasn’t my thing. [ bruises and bro. ] And do you mean lullabyes aren’t or singing in general isn’t?

[He doesn't reply to that because sure, Dave probably had his reasons.]

Both, sort of. I don't even know what would count as a lullabye and also, I would probably feel really stupid. [Probably. Maybe.]

Then don’t worry about it until and unless you want to. [ sage advice? ] It’s not super important.

It kind of is though. [Which is said before he gathers his thoughts and instead he focuses on the cat.] Anyway, this is not exactly solving the problem here.

I mean, whether or not that method would work doesn’t matter. I’ll ask you about shit but I don’t want you doin’ it unless you want to. And not if you’re not comfortable. It sucks to be penned in with bullshit like that, and I never want to do that to you. [ he already has given up on certain things he’s uncomfortable or unhappy with not being things? john shouldn’t have to. ] It’s not like that’s the only way. The more pertinent issue is you’re not tired.

I know you don't. [He figures, given their last few conversations, but at the same time he's settled where he's at and he shrugs slowly.]

Someday. And I will give you fair warning and stuff. [If he ever finds a reason to sing, sure. But as it is there are other things.] Are you tired at all? Be honest.
