[ so dave's "punishment" for john (which john would have done if he'd just asked like a normal human being probably) was to go out on the weekend to a Very Weird Foreign Art Film. there are subtitles. there is a slightly incomprehensible and philosophical plot. there are long monologues and weird stylistic shots and what have you and like, minima action and mostly just surrealist absurdism.

did it feel like punishment john

presumably john realized his error at some point and either fell asleep or actually tried to watch it who knows ty knows, ty should let me know, and we can move on after i know bc what if they have to leave suddenly ]

[This was not a thing he anticipated and while he doesn't exactly fall asleep at the theater, he does rest his head on Dave's shoulder and watches the film with a very bemused expression through half-lidded eyes. But Dave is punishing him and so he takes his punishment gracefully even if it feels vaguely torturous by the end.

He gets through the whole movie though and once the credits roll:]

[ like, to be fair it was a movie dave genuinely wanted to see. so he seems happy to those who can actually ready his body language, although the genuine contentment mixes with amusement when john asks the question. he'd probably shifted whenever john dropped his head to dave's shoulder to make it easier angle wise for john, but otherwise focused on the film the whole time. ]

Polish. Agree with me about the punishment pick now?

You're terrible. [But he's still grinning and he's not moving as the credits roll. Instead, he turns to tilt his face up toward Dave.] It was so much reading, Dave. Did you like it?

[He...can tell, but he likes asking.]

Yeah. [ one of those too-quick smiles. ] But you see why I didn't ask you normal?

[windeity]

[His favorite tbh.] Yes and no, but I also would have probably said yes if you had just asked and whined about it later. [Still mostly teasing.] Remind me never to pick up Polish though.

Do you know any foreign languages, anyway?

[windeity]

I took Spanish in high school but that doesn't mean too much, I think. Nothing I retained beyond, like, how to say my name and the word cat.

Oh, that's lame. I was goin' to make you say something to me.

[windeity]

[...hm.]

Do you even understand Spanish at all?

[parodeity]

[ a shrug and a so-so gesture. ]

I'm probably a lil rusty - but I'd say I'm better at Spanish than I am at Russian. Which I'm...still workin' on.

[windeity]

[...there's a considerable pause.]

Bailaré toda la noche contigo.

[Which is probably close enough.]

Also why Russian, exactly?

Yuri and Anya. [ but there's a startled look as dave stands up, intending to leave the theater. ] ...okay, worth it.

[windeity]

Oh. That answer should have been obvious, maybe. [But there's a dazzling kind of grin.] So maybe I remember a little more than I thought. [To his feet he goes.]

[ ummm. dave's expression and casual composure doesn't so much as falter though he raises an eyebrow, but his breath catches in his throat, and invisible pause. ] ...I always kinda like hearing people say things in different languages.

[windeity]

Even if you don't always understand it? [He'll take Dave's hand at least to lead him out of the theater.] I do think other languages can be pretty cool though.

Not knowing what someone is saying is half the fun.

[windeity]

It's kind of why I have thought about studying abroad sometimes. But I think I would probably get lost anyway.

Hire a navigator?
