[ it's early morning when dave gets back. he didn't text john when he left and he didn't text him when they arrived, and the first fucking thing he does actually is stumble into the dorm showers and blearily take one because he doesn't plan to leave the room for at least a little while for the day (not until the parade, at least) and the idea of dragging himself away from john to shower later is less appealing than just finishing it up now and then gluing himself to his boyfriend's side.

so john gets zero warning when dave unlocks the door and slides inside, his free hand scrubbing up under his shades to put pressure on his eyes as he shuts the door behind him, trying to clock john's location and maybe mewpac's if john picked up the cat already. ]

[Luckily for Dave, he won't have to look too far once he opens the door. The door unlocks and Dave walks in and on the floor next to the bed is a bundle of blankets, a pillow, and a few tufts of dark hair sticking out. His glasses are folded and laying on the floor next to his head and his phone's in his hand while Mewpac's perched quite contently on his back and butt. How is that comfortable, cat? Whatever.

John's asleep but Mewpac hears the door and automatically perks up, a trill sort of noise as she stands up and stomps on John's spine to jump off and trot to greet Dave, winding her way around his ankles and waiting for acknowledgement.

There's a slight shift under the blankets, but he's not quite awake yet. But here they are and there's a blanket half-hazardly tacked up against the window and what appears to be a half-empty bottle of water on the desk. Everything looks almost...normal.]

[ blanket? why the fuck is there a blanket over the window -

blackout curtains. they'd talked about that. it's probably john's attempt at making do, dave thinks. he picks up mewpac without missing a beat, scratching behind her ears as he tries to order his thoughts.

john's on the floor, and that's...

stupid...

and while he'd kind of be willing to join john usually dave also really wants to be in an actual bed. he drops the cat (cat, not a kitten) onto said bed and leans over john and tries to figure out if he even has to bother waking him up to move him.

probably not, if he's fast about it, and that's the one thing dave always is. at least the cat is used to him flashstepping, and john isn't as light a sleeper as dave so it's...

fine probably maybe he'll sleep through being toted up onto the bed instead of the goddamn floor, what the fuck john ]

[The cat crawls up to the head of the bed and settles near the pillows, four eyes blinking independently as she watches what Dave's doing. John, meanwhile, remains mostly asleep and Dave manages to flashstep enough to haul him up onto the bed with most of the blankets.

His glasses are still on the floor and yeah, he's mostly out still even if he frowns in his sleep by the sudden movement. Savior of the Waking World is definitely not quite awake yet.]

[ he goes back for the glasses and sets them on john's desk instead, then figures he can just leave john as is as he kicks off his shoes (he does not put them away properly at all) and after a second sitting on the edge of the bed hesitating takes off his own shades to drop them on the desk. he'll deal later, the blanket might be enough and it's just john.

it's probably harder to sleep through dave getting into bed and shifting around, but he's quiet about it and doesn't actively try to wake john up because neither of them was sleeping enough the past while, probably. but he's automatically slotting his back to the wall and dragging john in and to his chest, even though he doesn't usually immediately go to try to be a big spoon.

let him live maybe.

the cat probably judges and also takes over one of the pillows. ]

[Mewpac is a judgey asshole and John finds himself drifting into consciousness when Dave pulls him in, letting himself curl back into Dave's chest and immediately grabbing for one of his arms to hold onto with both of his own.

Frankly, John probably showered just the bare minimum to stop being a swampy wilderness man but that doesn't stop him from smelling a little like shampoo still and the fact he hasn't shaved for a few weeks and probably should. He doesn't bother turning around even though he's awake enough to register Dave's back, but instead he tightens his grip on the arm and moves to press his mouth to Dave's hand.

There's also a mumble of something but he's not that awake yet. Give him a sec.]

[ no, no seconds for john? dave doesn't even ask what he's mumbling, just presses a kiss to the back of john's neck in sleepy response. he kind of registered the need to shave; thanks to the lalonde half of his genetics dave...doesn't have the same problem, and he just showered anyway. he'd make a bigger deal about it but he doesn't bother to use words or tease when he's not sure john won't just doze back off again.

so john can keep one of his arms and the other just slots in securely around john's waist and it's fine, probably. ]

[It's fine probably because the bed's slowly moving from cold sheets to warm and cozy blankets and the cat's purring above their head. Dave's here and John finally opens an eye half-way to kind of stare at his arm.]

You're late. [It's a petulant kind of mumble and hardly serious at all, but here they are.]

[ dave just nuzzles against the side of john's neck since it's hard to reach elsewhere like this. ] I'm never late.

You were supposed to be back when I got back and you weren't. [There's a little bit of a laugh when there's nuzzling but he moves with his other arm to grab blankets and cover them further.] So you are late.

By conventional standards I'm not, because I couldn't get back sooner? Without time travel. [ why is he arguing. john had dave's hand near enough to kiss and now his fingertips trace over john's cheek. stubble??? ] But I'm sorry anyway. Forgive me? I don't feel up to a full on musical number so lemme win you back easier.

No time travel then. [That was easy. Give him a second to kind of roll around so he can still lean into him but also see him better.] I'll think about it.

[But he's grinning so yeah, not serious.] How are you going to win me back?

[ there's noises of complaint as john shifts because he'd apparently decided he was going to be a big spoon and john is not facilitating this??? but if john's moving to face him more he'll sigh and press closer. ]

Bribery, obviously. Or blackmail may be easier?

[Dave can be big spoon when John decides he doesn't want to look at him anymore and sleep instead?? Geez, Dave. But he's busy winding his legs around Dave's to trap him and cuddling up into his chest, nose burrowed in Dave's collar.]

Don't blackmail me, jackass. I have even more blackmail against you anyway I think. But I am definitely open to bribes.

[ this is fine probably. there aren't any embarrassing shivers unless john decides to rub his face against skin so whatever. ]

I can blackmail you if you want. I have more embarrassing photos of you than you have of me?

[That'll occur soon enough, actually.]

That's rude, do not blackmail me? Also I think I would have to be embarrassed by those photos for them to be embarrassing photos. So nice try.

[ but it hasn't yet so it's fine!

dave snorts. ]

I definitely have pictures you maybe don't want other people to see.

...Both, technically. But I wouldn't want to share some of the more embarrassing shots from here. [ there's an irritated noise as his arm around john's waist tightens. ] I haven't even shared 'em with you, I'm not about to go usin' them on other people.

[ he'll probably freak and stop talking whenever his shirt is more aside in a flustered way, but for now he's mostly focused on being flustered about the picture thing still yes. ]
