[ not much to see with his shades on; behind them his eyes are tracking things unseen, but with them - it's just dave, pale and clenching his teeth and then startling back a hair when he seems to snap out of whatever it is.

he apparently did not expect john to be anywhere near to touching him, and even if that was a thing he'd wanted (did want?) he doesn't complete the gesture.

probably he should talk about whatever that was, but instead he chooses to do what they have been doing and ignores mostly everything emotional he's putting himself through. he told john as much as john needs to know, probably, for the time being.

so he focuses on the practical. ]

I need to check outside of the town.

[That's not really a good sign either. He lets his hand drop slowly.]

I'm coming with you. What happened? What did you see? [He doesn't ask "are you okay" because it's too easy for Dave to say yes and John not knowing if that's the truth.]

[ dave swallows for a second, then just shrugs. ]

[ it's a neon warning sign not to time travel, maybe, and yet. ]

Faster if we fly?

[Yeah okay, what if he never lets Dave timetravel ever again?]

Right. [A nod.] Right. We can fly to check on things. Whenever you're ready.

Let's go. [ ready is relative and dave just lets himself lift off because he'd rather be doing something even if it's something stupid.

Wait for me! [Dave's already in the air and John moves back just a bit to kick off into the air to follow.]

I'm not goin' all that fast. [ he COULD go faster maybe - but in the air he can't really flashstep, so...? ] Let's just...head out wood-wards?

[Once he's up in the air he can keep up, but he nods and looks toward the woods by Flavo.] Okay...you have something in particular in mind?

Not really. Just...leaving the town, seeing if I get anything different in the forest. Let's not go in too deep, though? [ towards flavo works. ]

We won't. So what you are saying is you still want to try time travel again, but in the forest where it is probably even more dangerous than in town. Got it.

...Are you saying no, or. [ but yes he does want to try it again. ] You'll be there. Right?

No. I'm not saying no, I just want to make sure that is what is happening. I'll be right there though. [Like hell he's leaving now.]

Then yeah that's pretty much the summation of the whole thing. [ dave will be a little quiet until he touches down. ] You're...

[He follows, landing on the ground next to him and giving him another worried look.]

I'm still right here. [In case Dave thought otherwise.]

[ being distracted. ]

About? [Yeah, he's getting that. He's just going to keep talking to keep Dave grounded for the time being.]

Nothing important. [ he shakes himself, withdraws a little, and refocuses on the task at hand. right, time travel.

there's half a second of hesitation before he calls up his time tables again, but this time when he forces himself to love he does disappear. ]

[He jumps a little when Dave disappears, a hand reaching out to grab at nothing before he grasps the air and...waits...

...time travel is the worst, he thinks.]

[ turnabout is probably unfair play to the guy who turned into the breeze a lot while running from jade.

a few minutes later there's a soft displacement of air further away by ten or fifteen feet and dave looks...fine? a little calmer. still tired but less freaked out for the moment, even if it maybe hadn't registered how tense he was. ]

Works out here. But nowhere in town I've tried.

[On instinct he moves forward again. The windy thing and time travel displacement are two different things ok.]

So what do you think it is? A barrier or something?

[ there's a frustrated little shrug. ] I think something really, really doesn't want me to time travel inside the boundary. I don't know how or why. I still could do other shit and that didn't cause...whatever that was?

Okay. Then don't use time travel inside the barrier until we figure it out. We don't even know where the barrier could be coming from.

...Yeah, fine. [ one of those aborted movements where he starts towards john then stops himself, but. ] You're not gonna try your thing, either, are you?

[It's fine, he takes a step forward himself.] ...no. I was not planning on it, I think. I don't know how it would work here.

[ it's not quite physical contact, but it's something. dave shoves his hands into his pockets. ] ...dunno. You might get slammed with worse than I did. Even if not, it wouldn't...
