[ before i forget. TAKES PLACE...AFTER THE TALK THEY HAVE TO HAVE ON MOVE IN DATE TO DECURSE, but anyway. spring break is over so it's after class when john presumably comes back to their real live house to find...dave with the lights dimmed mostly because his shades are off as he hangs out in the living room, messing around with the cat. he's way too well dressed for this activity since he's sprawled on the living room floor playing with the cat? slacks and a dress shirt at least instead of a full tux or whatever but he glances up and. squints. because open door.

he's...sporadically attempting to loosen up his shades standards but it's probably been pretty hit and miss. he likes the defense. ]

Hey. We can leave for dinner whenever you want, if you're still down for a birthday dinner...? I got Mewpac some stellar wet food so she got date food also.

[He comes home from class and John finds his boyfriend and his furry-daughter on the floor and...it's kind of hilarious. He can't help but grin even as he quickly shuts the door to block the light as soon as he notices Dave's shades are gone.

It's nice. And Dave looks nice and he can't help the wide grin.]

I am definitely still down for a birthday dinner. But I am glad to hear you're treating her as well. I can get dressed and be ready in fifteen minutes?

You can take your time, dude. No rush. This ain't a reservations kinda thing, because I figured you'd like something else a little better.

[ that explains nothing, but okay. ]

So, uh, you can dress code however you want, I mean. But for outdoors weather.

Are we doing the picnic thing? [He sounds intrigued but at the same time he doesn't...entirely...want the surprise spoiled. Instead, he enters the house and approaches Dave, crouching on the ground to pet Mewpac's head and kiss Dave's forehead before he floats up and out of the way.]

Fifteen minutes. [...and he zips up the stairs to get ready! Fifteen minutes later he comes back down dressed in his own slacks and dress shirt. He's picked up the habit of dressing fancier again and especially doesn't mind for dates with Dave.]

I think my punctuality is rubbing off on you? [ amazing. can john keep it up...? dave gets to his feet, though, abandoning the cat who is definitely no longer a kitten. ]

Also I can tell you what we're doing if you really want?

You say that like I'm not a punctual person on my own. [Like. He's not, but still, shut up >|. Mewpac just stretches and walks away like it was her idea to abandon the boys and John shrugs.]

I am kind of feeling the surprise vibe here. So let's go with that.

You are definitely, definitely not punctual. [ there's a little laugh because yeah? no? ] But I love you in spite of that. Okay, keys?

[ since it's a Surprise ]

Thank you for accepting my flaws. [Flatly. But he takes his keys out of his pocket and tosses them over even if he's grinning anyway.] Are we going far?

No, although you are for sure not allowed to keep guessing??? You'll get it right and then where will we be. [ he catches the keys though and leads the way out. ]

This is still so weird. [ the house. which needs to be locked. the car in the driveway. ]

[windeity]

[He follows and he locks the door anyway before jogging toward the car.] I think you might actually be giving me too much credit to think I would guess right away. But sure. No guessing allowed.

You've already started guessing. [ he told john he was going out to dinner and john guessed picnic but whatever. ] So, how opposed are you to blindfolds as a concept? Like, right this second.

[windeity]

Depends. How likely are you to letting me crash right into something else if I'm wearing it? Like the answer is "not very opposed" either way but I am curious.

With my life, love of my life. But I also do not trust you to not fuck with me if you think it's funny and you know I would eventually find it funny.

[ the only response is startled laughter as he opens the car door. dave ends up standing there with one arm on the roof of the car and the other draped on the door. ]

[He doesn't quite get in, giving Dave a look.] Too much?

I don't know. How much of that was you bein' utterly ridiculous?

Not too much since it's pretty much true. Why?

You've never said that before.

[windeity]

Because I thought it would be too much! [Dave looked at him and now John's just kind of flustered like an idiot. But yes. Love of his life, etc etc. He figured that out recently enough.]

[ there's zero indication of dave's opinion on his face, but he raises his eyebrows. ]

...So, a blindfold is kosher. I have ties.

[windeity]

A blindfold's totally kosher. Give me a tie, I'll blindfold myself.

No way. Get in, I'm tying it for you.

[He rolls his eyes and gets into the car, settling in the passenger seat and patiently waiting for the blindfold.] Not too tight though, okay?

[ dave slides in and shuts the door, raising his eyebrows. ] I thought you trusted me?

[ he's eyeing john again instead of doing anything though. ]
